The design of our traditional Japanese Furoshiki bag is based on the art of folding a handcrafted square piece of cloth, that is then stitched together, offering a sustainable take on modern day plastic carry bags. Imagine origami, but simpler and more useful. The understated Japanese design makes the cut for just about any occasion, be it lunching with friends or grocery shopping. It is an environment friendly alternative to paper and plastic bags, creating a beautiful amalgamation of portability with craft. This light-weight tote is a classic shopper designed to carry anything from books to lunchboxes. The straps are an extension of the hand block printed fabric that can be neatly knotted on the top adding a beautiful accent to the minimalist design. The length of the strap can be easily adjusted, making it extremely versatile. There’s just no wrong way to wear it!

INSPIRATION: Nature has always been a huge part of me; be it a dried leaf in my backyard to some damp foliage after the rains, I just can't get enough of it! Even when I go for my early morning walks, I am busy stopping every few yards collecting fallen leaves, conjuring up patterns in my head and creating mood boards. It sets the perfect tone to start my day!  That's the reason we chose the name "Koyo' for this pattern, which means 'Red leaves' in Japanese.

Our Furoshiki bag is a completely handmade artisan product, crafted by our weaver Radhakrishna from Bengaluru and hand printed by artists Deepak, Ali bhai and Bachchu. Besides earning a fair income from their work, the artisans also have a sense of belonging, a place that they can call their own, that gives them a life filled with love, pride and dignity, where they can benefit from being together as a community. From hand dyeing to block printing, the processing is labour intensive and can take several days to make. Meet the makers here.

ORIGIN: "The majority of organic cotton is grown on small-scale farmlands in Erode, a small district in Tamil Nadu, and because you're not using synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, you don't need to use as much water", says our weaver Radhakrishna in Bengaluru, Karnataka who regularly purchases this 100% organic cotton yarn to weave the fabric.

We help you take good care of your purchase. With a little love and care, your cotton bag will last longer. We celebrate re-use, swapping and encourage you to repair whenever possible.
